A grand foyer provides plenty of space for decorative touches that preview what is to come throughout the rest of the home. But many homes do not have a large foyer separated from the rest of the home by architectural features. Very often the ‘foyer’ is a simple entry space directly in front of the door. Unfortunately, it can become an overflow space full of outerwear and shoes, but with a little planning and creativity, it is possible to give a small entry its very own definitive style.

Create Definition with Style

A small entry is typically an extension of the living room with no real separation from the living area. A low-profile double-sided bookcase can be used as a half-wall when placed perpendicular to the doorway. Use the lowest shelf to store shoes and add stylish wicker baskets or fabric colored boxes to hold keys, cell phones, mail and other everyday items that go in and out of the house. The top shelf can be used to your decorative advantage, displaying decorative accessories, such as figurines, small sculpture, plants or candles.

Expand the Entry with Wall Mirrors

Choose a framed wall mirror that accents the style of the adjacent living space and hang it next to the door. The mirror will reflect any light that comes through windows and it will make the space seem larger and brighter. It also offers a convenient place to check your appearance before heading out the door.

Decorating with Low-Profile Wrought Iron Wall Decor

In a small entry the last thing you need is imposing wall art or frames that protrude into what little space is available. Wrought iron wall art is the perfect solution for adding style and dimension that stays flush against the wall. The open nature of wrought iron allows the wall to show through, adding contrast and keep the look airy and elegantly simple. Wrought iron wall décor can be found in many different styles, colors, shapes and sizes. Try an appropriately sized piece above the door for distinction that will add the illusion of height. Or try a grouping of smaller pieces on a wall to complement a framed mirror or pair of wrought iron wall sconces.

Other Decorative Options

•    If floor space is ample, a small console or hall table will add decorative flair to the entry. Whether your style is Craftsman, Contemporary or Country, a small entry table will provide a base for additional stylish accents. Table art sculpture, small accessories or candles in distinctive holders can be gathered on the table to create a stylish vignette. When arranged below a framed wall mirror, the beauty of the sculpture and accessories will gain new and exciting perspectives. A small basket or ceramic dish will provide a convenient location for dropping keys, mail, or cell phones.
•    Smaller entry spaces can gain distinction through the inclusion of a pedestal of marble, metal, granite, or plaster. Use it to elevate table art sculpture to new heights, or enhance floral themes with a beautiful vase overflowing with fresh fragrant flowers.
•    Wall shelves of appropriate depth can often be accommodated if there is wall space that is free of the path of the door. Displayed near eye level wall shelves provide well-situated display space for small sculpture, framed art and photos and other distinctive accessories.

Yesterday I was on a “lamp” mission. I needed lamps for 3 different projects I am currently working on and started my search online to preview some stores I was planning on visiting.

With lamps being such an essential part of a rooms design, I decided to scramble up a guide for lamps under $100.

Most people know that lamps are important in a room, but not all know why. So, Why are lamps so important in a rooms design? This is because they offer a much more intimate lighting than an over head light. Over head lighting is very harsh and often inappropriate to use. By placing lamps in the correct places around your home, you create a relaxing scene. Much like having a reading lamp on while laying in bed which offers a softer ray of light, rather than the ceiling light which would be overpowering and stain your eyes.

By placing lamps in your living room, in the evening they can provide a soft warm glow to your room. They are also excellent sources of light for functional viewing such as reading, playing a game or watching tv.

Task lamps or table lamps are also functional in a work area such as an office, craft room or garage work station; where close vision is usually needed. You can place the lamp as close as you desire and move it around the room as needed.

These are just some of the many reasons to use table lamps in your rooms design. There millions or lamps to choose from for your home all ranging from cheap to extremely expensive, but that does not mean you need to spend a fortune to have high style.

Now that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner it is time to get going on a unique gift or a unique and creative way to celebrate this Valentine’s Day. I think most of us stall on unique and creative valentine ideas and gifts because we have not been given any suggestions to get our creative juices following. The point of this article will be to stimulate you to come with some great ways to show your loved one that they are really loved and appreciated.

FIRST – Try the rain-x message routine. This is actually one of my favorite ones. Simply take some rain-x or other anti-fogging spray and spray the mirror that always gets fogged up with someone takes a shower. While the fluid is still wet take a Q-tip and write a romantic message into the fluid. Let dry and watch the results. When your loved one steams up the mirror with the shower on Valentine’s Day they will see the message standing out on the mirror.  This one is usually guaranteed to surprise and please.

SECOND – Go to the store and buy some sidewalk chalk. Slip out in the evening and write a message/valentine on the sidewalk, porch or driveway for your loved one to see in the morning. Since it will wash off their will be no harm done to the concrete.

THIRD – Have a star named after your loved one. This is a really a unique gift. You will get a map of the location of the star and be able to view it and show it to your loved one.

FOURTH – Rent a motel room and have dinner brought in as room service. You can take your own champagne, flowers, or chocolates or have those delivered to the room with the meal or ahead of time. This one is sure to please.

FIFTH – Take your gift and put it in a gift bag. Then tie the bag to the garage door handle. When your loved one comes home and hits the remote to lift the door the gift will be pulled up and dangling in front of their eyes. This is a great way to deliver the gift.

SIXTH – Do a bed turndown for them. Go to your local flower shops and get some rose petals. Sometimes you can even get these for free or simply buy a rose or two and tear off the petals. Turn the bed covers down and sprinkle the rose petals on their pillow. Lay a chocolate mint or some other chocolate treat on the pillow. They will appreciate the thought.

SEVENTH – Set up a romantic picnic on the living room floor. Turn on some romantic music and enjoy some gourmet picnic treats with some wine and chocolate/cheesecake/candies etc for dessert. Port wine goes great with the chocolate. Turn down the lights or have some candles burning nearby. Of course, if weather permits then have the picnic outdoors this Valentine’s Day. Could follow the picnic with a romantic movie.

EIGHTH – On Valentine’s Day call his/her favorite radio station and have their favorite song dedicated for them. Then call them at work and tell them to turn it on listen at the appropriate time. If this doesn’t work then record the dedication and play it back for them later in the evening.

NINTH – Buy or make up a themed gift basket. These are very easy to do. You can make one around their favorite hobby such as knitting, sewing, golfing, fishing, barbequing, cooking, spa comforts (bath crystals, bath salts etc). This is really a unique way to show them that you understand what they like and it will be sure to please.

TENTH – Have a surprise Valentine’s Day party for them. There will be a lot of people this year that would enjoy going to a Valentine’s Day party since Valentine’s Day falls on a weekend this year. The party can be easily themed and a lot of fun for all involved. If done by the gal simply asks the gals that you invite to help out with the planning and setup. Same thing is true if the guys are planning the Valentine Day party.

There are usually two types of feelings that people have towards winter. The first of these is a readiness to welcome the lengthening nights, the promise of hearty meals, and the cosy atmosphere brought on by the darkening vista outside. The second is of course more problematic – we don’t want to accept the cold, the perpetual dark, the thought of huddling in the living room from the elements. In a sense, the latter view can be remedied and turned completely on its head with a little effort, producing massive benefits to your general wellbeing over the winter months. Here are some ideas:

Get into your winter food: Embrace the stodge! It’s no good eating Mediterranean salads through to March; winter calls for hearty grub that’s filling and full of goodness. Broths, ratatouille, root vegetable soups are ideal – if you’re really feeling adventurous, plant out some winter veg (garlic, onions) yourself to see that the cold and the wet don’t ruin everything.

Chase the sun: Alright, it might be nippy, but even the coldest days can be fine and sunny, and give you that boost of goodness that only sunshine can provide. A quick walk on your lunch break through a nearby park when the weather is promising will not only wake you up from a drowsy morning’s work, but you’ll get a chance to feel the sun on your face and get some fresh air to boot.

Dress for it: Summer dresses are only going to take you so far – sooner or later you’ll have to change the wardrobe a little. Getting hold of a chunky-knit woollen jumper, some comfy gloves and a jolly old winter hat will be sure to change your mood when taking to the cold air of a morning. It’s only by ignoring the change of weather and not responding to it that you’re likely to freeze!

Make friends with it: You’re sure to dislike the onset of winter if you don’t get out and observe it – throw some warm clothes, some good boots and take a walk on a bracing day. If you have little ones, set them the challenge of making leaf rainbows (especially from maples); the range of colours is incredible, and serves to remind us that winter isn’t all dull skies and failing vegetation, but a necessary process in the cycle of the seasons.

Stretch out those evenings: There’s no getting around it; over winter, after coming home from work, cooking and clearing up, you are likely to find yourself with only a few hours of relaxing time left. If you want to beat the cycle, do any food preparation you can in the mornings, and, what the hell, leave the pots overnight if it’s a question of you or them. They’ll not fall to pieces. A little reorganization can mean bags more time for you to unwind and refresh yourself.
